Paralegal

Legal Aid of the Bluegrass seeks a full-time Paralegal for its Lexington, Kentucky-based office.  Legal Aid of the Bluegrass is a dynamic civil legal aid provider seeking public interest-minded staff to help us reach our goal of alleviating the profound and brutal effect of poverty on people’s lives. As a team member at Legal Aid of the Bluegrass, paralegals can participate with us in ensuring fairness, protecting families and changing lives through the civil legal system.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Answering telephones, take messages, direct calls, and provide information to callers. Greeting visitors to the office and schedule appointments.
  • Actively participating in staff and planning meetings, task forces, and training sessions as required.
  • Perform extensive client eligibility screening.
  • Opening and closing files and maintaining the case filing system.
  • Performing extensive legal research, preparing complex legal documents, and maintaining substantive expertise in the law for the Unit to which the Paralegal is assigned.
  • Interact with clients, other staff members, service providers, and court and administrative officials in a professional, appropriate, collegial, and cooperative manner.  Establish and maintain relationships with clients to establish trust and obtain accurate and complete information.
  • Maintain accurate and complete files and prepare timely and complete forms and records required for client services or related administrative tasks. Enter accurate data into electronic case management systems.
  • Perform and complete other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements, Skill & Abilities include:

  1. Four-year degree from an accredited College or University or an associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Studies or have equivalent experience. 

  2. Ability to clearly and accurately communicate verbally and in writing and have a pleasant telephone demeanor.

  3. Must be able to travel to courthouses, outreach events, trainings and other events. 

  4. Ability to use office and computer technology, including case management and word processing software.

 

Legal Aid of the Bluegrass is a non-profit law firm providing civil legal assistance to nearly 220,000 low-income people in 33 counties from 4 offices located in Covington, Lexington, Morehead, and Ashland. Legal Aid of the Bluegrass’ legal practice is primarily in the areas of family law, domestic violence, government and VA benefits, and housing and consumer law. Salary Range: $32,991 - $45,792
