Pro Bono is a Real Solution

Legal Aid organizations across the nation are recognized as a lawyers’ charity. In part, this is because being an attorney is necessary in filling many available volunteer roles within legal aid organizations. Lawyers are also encouraged by bar associations to fulfill ethical obligations to provide legal assistance to those less fortunate. Opportunities to provide pro bono services are copious and the demand for attorneys to take cases continues to grow.

Legal Aid of the Bluegrass Serves as Benefits Enrollment Center

Did you know that Legal Aid of the Bluegrass’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) Program provides support to people who are aged 60+ and disabled individuals receiving Medicare benefits in 30 Central, Northern and Northeastern counties? The program has four goals:

to educate individuals on the benefit programs that affect their lives through one-on-one counseling sessions and outreach activities;

to assist with resolving benefit issues;

to complete applications for benefit programs; and

Expanded Protection for all Kentuckians

The importance of pro bono work in providing professional development opportunities cannot be overstated. Beyond providing a free service in the community and doing some good for the world, attorneys are given the chance to take cases that may not be available to them in a traditional legal setting. Legal Aid of the Bluegrass sought to boost the participation of attorneys in its volunteer lawyer programs and engage them in a way that ensured professionals would continue to take pro bono cases well into their careers. One of the groups targeted by LABG for pro bono was young attorneys.

High Quality Legal Services for the Poor and Vulnerable

Legal Aid of the Bluegrass provides civil legal assistance designed to alleviate the most brutal problems of the low income people living in 33 northern and central Kentucky counties. These services are typically in the areas of government benefits, consumer, housing and family law. The service that our attorneys provide is a tool that helps people in emergency situations meet their need for food, shelter, medical care, and freedom from financial or physical abuse.
