Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but share a commitment to access to justice. Join our community of volunteers who help educate and advocate to elevate our clients' voices. 

We have volunteer opportunities in the following categories: 

MEDICARE COUNSELORS

Educate Medicare beneficiaries and anyone over the age of 60 so they can make informed decisions about health benefits issues based on their circumstances and needs.

LONG TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN (LTCO)

Visit frail and elderly residents in family care homes, personal care homes, or nursing facilities without whom many would have no visitors and no voice.

VOLUNTEER WITH MEDICARE SHIP

The focus of the SHIP Program is to educate Medicare beneficiaries and anyone over the age of 60 so they can make informed decisions about benefits issues based on their circumstances and needs.

We welcome volunteer SHIP counselors who can help eligible clients with:

  • Counseling at either the counseling site, by telephone, or at the home of a homebound client
  • Filling out forms, filing claims, and appeals
  • Filling out forms and providing information on appeal processes
  • Providing accurate and current information on programs for older adults
  • Organizing paperwork (e.g., hospital bills, doctor bills, Medicare notices)
  • Comparing long term care and Medigap insurance policies
  • Applying for money saving benefits (e.g., Extra Help, Medicaid, SSI, SNAP)
  • Referring beneficiaries to appropriate agencies for application programs

VOLUNTEER WITH THE LONG TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM

Friendly Visitors: Community volunteers who visit residents of nursing homes or personal care homes on a regular basis. A friendly visitor can connect a resident in need to the District Long Term Care Ombudsman who can advocate on his or her behalf.

Two (2) hours of training is required.

Need Legal Help

Legal aid protects the rights of people living at or near poverty with legal problems such as:  housing, consumer, family and public benefits. We ensure access to justice for all people, including veterans, the elderly, those who are disabled and victims of domestic violence. You can call us to apply for assistance Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or Friday 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Calls are answered in the order they are received. You may also apply online by clicking "Apply For Help" below.
